Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
When people think of the Cayman Islands, they tend to think first of Grand Cayman. The biggest island of the three, it is home to 95% of the population of the Cayman Islands, and nearly all of the Islands’ infrastructure and amenities. Much of this is concentrated in the capital, George Town and most of the Island’s tourism provision in Seven Mile Beach.
This leaves the rest of the Island fairly unspoiled and the pace of life relaxed. Long white coral beaches, perfect clear blue waters, gorgeous temperatures, welcoming Islanders, rich culture and heritage and the quality of the tourism provision are notable features. No wonder Grand Cayman is such a top tourist destination for cruise visitors, package vacations and independent travelers.
Grand Cayman covers an area of 76 square miles, being 22 miles long and 8 miles wide at its widest point. The Island reaches 80 feet above sea level at its highest point. For administrative purposes, Grand Cayman is split into five districts, centered round the towns of George Town, West Bay, Bodden Town, North Side and East End.
The total population of Grand Cayman is 42,397 people of whom 23,275 or 55% live in George Town and 22% in West Bay.

eCay Tip – Post Hurricane Recovery
Hurricane Ivan struck Grand Cayman in September 2004, wreaking enormous damage on the Island. The Island’s Government, businesses and population have worked hard not only to recover from the effects of the Hurricane, but to use the opportunity to improve the Island’s facilities. Three years on, little damage is evident, and new amenities abound. However, some things are not quite back to normal so it advisable to check first before traveling to a particular organization or facility.
