Vigoro Nursery on Agricola was so pleased to have a class from the Lighthouse School come to visit.  The children were fantastic! They had such a fun time touring the garden center and then settling into the "Vigoro Classroom" under the huge ficus tree for some real gardening work in the form of planting their very own tomatoes.   The Fairy Garden was also a big hit with the children as well as some very welcomed juice and cookies.  The teachers who accompanied the children were simply lovely and so caring of the children.  We look forward to another visit in the future.

 The latest show was about parsley and rosemary, and some fun things to do with both of them!!  

A fun fact about rosemary is that in ancient Greece students would wear wreaths of Rosemary on their heads as it improved memory!  Some also believe that a Rosemary Sprig placed behind the ear will help with a headache.  In the 16th century it was used to disinfectant to kill germs in sickrooms.  Its leaves were also scattered on graves to show that the beloved family member would not be forgotten.  Another wonderful tidbit about this great herb is that the stem, once the rosemary sprigs have been removed makes a fantastic, flavorfull skewer for cooking on the grill!  

Growing it in Cayman is very easy as it loves dry hot weather.  However it will not tolerate overwatering….at all!!!

     Parsley is often thought to be just that “green sprig on the plate” which is thrown away with the residue of the dinner.  This is doing a great injustice to a wonderful herb.  Parsley is rich in vitamins and in has been used for thousands of years both in culinary and medicinal ways.  It is interesting to note however that in ancient Greece, parsley was used for everything except cooking and eating!!! 

     When planting tomatoes, be sure to also plant parsley to enhance the tomato flavor!
