South Coast Bar by the Water's Edge

South Coast Bar & Grill is the successor of Reef Point Bar & Restaurant, which was founded by mother and son, Ventris and Charles Powell in December 1978.

Ventris’ love of cooking and magical touch with ingredients and Charles love for fishing was the perfect recipe for a coastal restaurant.

Long before they entered the restaurant business Ventris was already lending her cooking talents to The Lighthouse Club and Decker’s Restaurant in Georgetown. Meanwhile, Charles was employed with the government as a fireman and devoted much of his spare time to fishing. His extensive knowledge of the waters from East End to Bodden Town and his great fisherman’s luck led to an abundance of local fish. With more fish than the family could eat and a generous spirit, Ventris began preparing local dishes which Charles would share with his colleagues at work. In no time at all the demand for their food became so overwhelming that Reef Point Restaurant & Bar was born.

After 26 years of serving locals and visitors alike the restaurant was completely destroyed by Hurricane Ivan on September 11, 2004. Today if you look out the window to the east, you can see the humble remains. This was a devastating loss for the whole family which by then included younger brother Tony and his wife, Licci, who had began managing the business since 1996.

Tony and Licci, who are now the new owners of the restaurant, were determined to continue the family traditions of local foods in a friendly, seas side location. Two years after the storm, on December 29th 2006 the doors to a new establishment called South Coast Bar & Grill opened to locals and visitors.

Today Ventris is retired but is still cooking at home and caters to the family restaurant. If you are ordering a local dish she may well have cooked it or it is her recipe that is used by the staff. Charles, while no longer active in the restaurant business still supplies his catches to the restaurant. It is still a family business now with Tony’s daughters Darcie, Samantha, Kasey and Little Jizzel and son in-law Howard contributing toward the success of the restaurant. There is a sure chance you may see our family as you relax and enjoy our hospitality.
