As we move through 2026, the Cayman Islands continues to face a range of hazards — from the Atlantic hurricane season to flooding, fires, tsunamis, and other emergencies that remind us that risk is not confined to a single season or event. Preparedness must be a year-round commitment.

This year, our theme says it all: Preparedness is Power: Be Ready Every Day. It speaks to the heart of what we are building at Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) — a Culture of Readiness that lives not just in our plans and systems, but in the habits and choices of every household, business, and community across our islands.

Our four pillars — Preparedness, Mitigation, Response, and Recovery — reflect the full arc of what our communities face when disaster strikes. Recovery, in particular, is where the human dimension of emergency management becomes most visible. It is the work of helping families return to stability, supporting the most vulnerable among us, and rebuilding not just structures, but livelihoods and a sense of normalcy. Humanitarian support is central to that mission — ensuring access to shelter, food, and essential services in the immediate aftermath, and coordinating longer-term assistance for those who need it most, including older adults, persons with disabilities, and others with special needs.

Climate change continues to increase our risk — stronger storms, heavier rainfall, rising seas, and the weakening of natural coastal protections like our coral reefs demand that we build resilience deliberately and continuously.
